5. GIVING & SPENDING: Giving is another element that is part of many holidays. Getting out of yourself by giving to others can add a wonderful dimension to a holiday. Even though there are those who tend to be stingy, a huge number of people live at the other extreme: over-giving. Perhaps your form of over-giving is financial. Perhaps you give more life energy than you have. Perhaps you drain your life energy on people who don’t appreciate it, or on things that leave you more drained rather than more filled up. We all have boundaries. When you violate yours you sign up to become resentful and exhausted. The best way to avoid this is with an “Over-Giving Prevention Plan.” Guilt-based, sacrifice-based “love” serves no one in the long run. Don’t allow shoulds-based expectations to run you. Place your passion, and however much life energy you have, in charge of your choices. Place yourself not only on exhaustion alert, but on resentment alert. If you’re willing to be honest with yourself you will know when you’re over the line in the amount of money you’re spending on gifts or the amount of time you’re spending on sending holiday cards. Want to feel different about a holiday? Be honest with yourself about your limits and stay in integrity with your boundaries.

6. PERSONAL RE-CENTERING ACTIVITIES: One of the biggest traps people fall into with holidays is falling out of life balance in preparing for them or in celebrating them. Self-neglect poisons holidays. The antidote is honoring your personal boundaries. Keep up your self-care habits. Because of how seductive some holidays can be it is wise to make your self-care commitments beforehand. Reserve the right to take “time outs”, whether from being with others or from the general hustle and bustle.
